Mahavir Jayanti is the festival which holds a major
significance in the Jain community and is celebrated with great brightness
across the world. The festival commemorates the birth of Lord Mahavira. Lord
Mahavira was the last Tirthankara, and is thus considered the founder of
contemporary Jainism and the most significant Tirthankara of this age. The idol
of Lord Mahavir is carried out on a chariot, in a procession called Rath
Yatra. On the way religious rhymes are recited. Statues of Lord Mahavir
are given a ceremonial anointment called the Abhishek. On this auspicious
day, most members of the Jain community engage in some sort of charitable
act, prayers, pujas, and observe fasts. Mahavir was born in Kundalagrama,
Bihar, on the 13th day of the Chaitra month or the 13th day of the bathing moon
in the Chaitra month of the Hindu calendar. King Siddhartha and Queen Trishala
gave birth to him in 599 BC. He spent the next 12 years practicing selfand
studying various religious scriptures. Lord Mahavir's teachings have had a
profound impact on the world, and his principles continue to inspire millions
of people across the world. He taught the principles of non-violence,
truthfulness, celibacy, and non-possessiveness. Lord Mahavir believed that all
living beings are equal and should be treated with respect and kindness, May
